Dig into the Junk Drawer
Welcome to A. E. Lowan’s Junk Drawer! This is a place where you can find out a little more about us – what we are watching, reading, listening to, and playing. What our current obsessions are. This page will change as the winds move us, so check back to see what we’re into from time to time.
Jennifer (November 2018)
Kristin and I are sick this November, so I’ve been spending a lot of time relaxing and trying to distract myself and get well.
I’ve been playing a little World of Warcraft. It is an online role-playing game and lets me hang with friends and help them slay internet dragons. I play both Alliance and Horde and prefer hunters, disc priests, and rogues (Kristin says I have more rogues than a CIA convention). I am trying my hand at a baby warlock.
I am currently reading Assaph Mehr’s Felix the Fox books. If you haven’t read them yet, they are urban fantasy / detective fantasy set in a city based on about a thousand years of ancient Roman history. They are awesome! You can find the first book, Murder in Absentia, here.
Working on Ties of Blood and Bone, I have a lot of songs on loop that have to do with our newest character, Alerich Ashimar. Two of my favorites right now are:
In the Blood – this is Home Free’s cover of the John Mayer song and I wake up with it in my head nearly every day.
She Used to Be Mine – this is Chase Holfelder’s cover of Sara Bareilles’s song from her musical Waitress
Jessica (November 2018)
I’ve been trying to work ahead in my current semester and writing a lot of flash fiction this month. I’ve also been working on mastering new digital art and sketching techniques. I have been using an open-source art program called Krita for digital art and I can’t recommend it enough.
I am currently reading Mercedes Lackey’s Last Herald-Mage Trilogy. It is set in her fantasy Kingdom of Valdemar.
The song I can’t get out of my head is Castle by Halsey. Watch it with this warning – you’ll never get it out of your head either.
Kristin (November 2018)
Between me being sick, Jennifer being sick, and having a real scare with one of our office minions, November has been a little crazy. In my downtime, I’ve been devouring Benjamin Sobieck’s The Writer’s Guide to Weapons: A Practical Guide for Using Firearms and Knives in Fiction. It was been amazingly helpful.
I am practically bouncing in my seat waiting for The Last Jedi! We have our tickets for IMAX opening week and I keep watching the trailer over and over.
The song I can’t get out of my head is Runnin’ by Adam Lambert. It is such an Alerich song.
