KV’s Review
It’s not often that I get to say I was delighted by a book, but here we are with ‘delighted’ as the best word I can use to describe my reaction. I come from an academic background, which means I’m terribly nitpicky and choosy about character details, world building, and plausibility. Harris has won me over on all accounts. Her characters are complex and contradictory, with an MC who can sense truth and lies but is fully capable of lying to herself; her world is well-fleshed out and plausible and made clear early on; and her location is wonderfully authentic. Harris’s writing style itself is direct and follows her MC’s inner monologue expertly, and she pulls off humor without over-extending the jokes. All-in-all, a wonderful series introduction. I can’t wait to devour the rest.
